We thank Indian River Elementary School in Edgewater, Florida, for being the 15th school to take part in the Peace by Peace Green Classroom Initiative. We gifted organic indoor air purifying plants and gave an educational presentation about the benefits of growing plants to all of the students in Randal Preston, Ruth Stevens and James Overley's 1st grade classes. Every student now has a plant on their desk that they will take care of throughout the rest of the school year. The plant is theirs to keep at the end of the year. We also demonstrated how to propagate pothos plants with the intention of students using the plants that they were gifted to fill up their classrooms further.
Plants in the learning environment improve students' overall learning experience and academic performance. The plants provide increased levels of oxygen which is essential for brain development and cognitive function. Caring for their plant helps each student build a greater connection to nature leading to enhanced compassion and respect. We look forward to helping Indian River Elementary develop its garden as well as the Traveling Garden. 02.03.17

Peace by Peace organized with the LSU AgCenter’s W.A. Callegari Environmental Center to have their compost given to the University Terrace Elementary School Garden. We want to thank our friend and fellow LSU Alumnus Sean Nelson for picking up the compost and delivering it to the UT Garden on Thursday, September 8th. The UT Garden lost a lot of its soil during the recent Louisiana flood, and this replaces it in time for students to begin gardening this month. We would also like to thank the LSU AgCenter’s Don Labonte and Jeff Corkern for allowing us to use their compost, as well as University United Methodist Church’s Kids Hope USA Director Shirley Flake for partnering with us. We will continue to post updates of the UT Garden in the coming days and weeks.
